Digital Address Printers: A Buying Guide
If you mail in batches of hundreds or thousands, an address printer prints the address, barcode and return address straight onto each piece as it feeds, instead of labels or a desktop printer.
The quick rule: match the print height to what you print in one pass (address block only, or address plus return address and permit), and the duty cycle to your busiest month.
What to look for
- Image area / print height. The tallest block the printer covers in one pass. An address with a barcode needs less height than an address plus return address and permit indicia.
- Envelopes and postcards per hour. Rated on a #10 envelope or a postcard at the maker's stated settings. Higher-resolution modes run slower.
- Material size and thickness. Check the largest flat and the thickest booklet or catalog you mail.
- Feeder. Some printers have an integrated feeder; in-line models rely on a separate feeder or another machine.
- Duty cycle. The monthly volume the maker designs the printer for.
- Cartridges and interface. How many inkjet cartridges the head uses, and whether it connects by USB, Ethernet or WiFi.
Models in the catalog
The digital address printers catalog lists 8 current models with manufacturer specifications, sources and photos: Formax (3) · Rena (5). Brands are listed alphabetically.
We don't name a “best” model or rank brands. The right machine depends on your volume, stock and space, so filter the catalog on the specs above. We don't list prices; these machines are mostly sold through authorized dealers.
